Canteen art, by Stefi Orazi
8th July 2010 / Canteen art, by Stefi Orazi
Speaking of creative collaboration, we’re currently working with artist, Stefi Orazi. Or rather she’s doing the working and we’re doing the looking-on-in-amazement while she creates wonderful illustrations of our restaurants and animals (yes, animals) for postcards, as well as for a little surprise we’ve got coming up for little people.
If you’re a fan of modernist architecture, you might have heard of Stefi already. If not, find out more about her and her work here.
You're invited to Canteen's 5th Birthday
6th July 2010 / You're invited to Canteen's 5th Birthday
As well as that little surprise, you can also look forward to helping us celebrate our fifth birthday throughout August and September. We’re cooking up a whole bunch of great offers for you, including free cake, free coffee and fantastic meal deals – so stay tuned for more details.
Lunch at your desk? Try desk at your lunch
5th July 2010 / Lunch at your desk? Try desk at your lunch
Does that make sense? We’re not sure. What we do know is that sometimes you get more work done when you’re not in the office staring at the same old surroundings all day (sorry, workmates). Especially since the average desk is 400 times more contaminated than a toilet seat (see the link at the bottom of this newsletter if you don’t believe us). So why not swap your desk for a table, brainstorm over brunch or meet over some Great British meat? All Canteen branches feature free Wi-Fi (like Starbucks, but with better coffee), private booths, not to mention Great British Standard 1363 (that’s plug sockets to me and you). So you can stay connected and your laptop, iPad or smartphone can stay juiced. And there are a few other reasons to bring your work into Canteen. Inspirational, award-winning design and tasty snacks and treats to boost concentration levels. Not to mention our special ‘fast service’ menu. Its food comes super-quick and includes pies, stews and bakes, as well as fish and chips, salads and soups. And remember: lunch isn’t for wimps. It’s for people who want to have a long life and a productive afternoon. Alternatively, we’ll be just as happy if you want to come in and run off coffee all day, just let our staff know and they'll leave you in peace. So, workers of London, lay down your mice. Pop into a branch of Canteen and go to work on some Great British food.
Canteen Cellar Club
4th July 2010 / Canteen Cellar Club
Wine. We love it. And, luckily for us, we get to spend hours choosing our favourites from around the world. From Chapel Down in Kent to Tiddy Widdy Well in McLaren Vale, Australia – and lots of places in between. But enough about us. How about you? Because if you’d like to learn the basics, top up your knowledge or maybe just have a bit of fun, then sign up to one of the Cellar Club events we're holding at your Baker Street Branch. 16 September – Beginner’s guide to wine (£10): Spend an evening with our experts and get a great introduction to the various grapes and wines, without having to go on an expensive course. 14 October – Meet the grower (£10): Meet the passionate people behind the wine. Get closer to what happens during the journey from grape to glass. And experience for yourself different wines and vintages. 18 November – Winemaker’s dinner (£45): Dinner + wine + the thinking behind the dinner + wine combo = insight into the selection process.! 20 January – Wine quiz (£10): Time to put everything you’ve learnt to the taste test, post New Year detox, natch.
There are only 30 places for each event so book now by emailing cellarclub@canteen.co.uk

Real Food Market
30th June 2010 / Real Food Market
London’s farmers’ markets mean us city folk can get our hands on produce direct from producers and that means the freshest ingredients at low prices. In fact, there’s only one drawback of this set up as far as we can tell – and that’s having to wait till you get home to satisfy the hunger pangs that strike as you walk around and shop. Of course this won’t be a problem at the Real Food Festival Market taking place at Southbank this summer. That’s because you’ll be able to pop into our Royal Festival Hall branch and enjoy ingredients just as fresh in our hearty dishes. Or why not stay outside and enjoy our outdoor hog roast and mobile Meantime bar? It all kicks off on 2 July. Here’s the schedule: 10:30 – Canteen head chef, Cass Titcombe, cooks breakfast for press and chairman of London Food, Rosie Boycott, using only market ingredients. 11:00 – A few words from Philip Lowery, festival founder. 11.10 – Rosie Boycott on the importance of the London Food Strategy. 11:30 – Rude Health Rants (see link below) 12:00 – Cooking demo from Cass, then Foyles book signing. Right now – For reading this far, we’ll make your Union Hand-Roasted coffee FREE with any cooked breakfast before 10:30am if you can present a print-out of this email when you ask for the bill. Valid for the duration of the festival. How fresh is that? More details about the Real Food Festival at Southbank here.
BBQ, bangers and bar at Canary Wharf
28th June 2010 / BBQ, bangers and bar at Canary Wharf
As if big-screen tennis and free strawberries and cream Eton mess weren’t enough, our Canary Wharf branch is also offering you the chance to pig out at a hog roast and BBQ. Sausages on the grill (as opposed to DJs on the night) will include our very own special recipe sausage, the Canteen ‘London Banger’. And a mobile bar from Meantime Brewery will provide you with some equally tasty liquid refreshment, to wash down our pork. It comes from royally appointed Richard Woodall, whose meats are one of Cumbria’s finest exports (up there with Kendall mintcake). Doesn’t it just make you want to sing the national anthem? Meet Richard Woodhall here.
Canary Wharf beats Wimbledon
27th June 2010 / Canary Wharf beats Wimbledon
It’s £2.50 for 10 strawberries and cream at Wimbledon this year so raise a glass of Nyetimber British sparkling wine to our staff at our Canary Wharf branch. They’re offering FREE, yes FREE, strawberries and cream Eton mess with every purchase of this delicious West Sussex tipple during the tournament. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to watch the tennis on the big screen in the square outside – from your seat. With grunters like Sharapova playing, we’re not sure how you’re supposed to get any work done with that, ahem, racquet, going on. So why not call a time out and enjoy a refreshing drink and free pud on us? Find out more about Canary Wharf summer screenings here.
Cheffo on the box - great!
26th June 2010 / Cheffo on the box - great!
Were you watching? Canteen head chef, Cass Titcombe (maybe we can just call him Cass from now on?), was on BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen this weekend. In case you missed it, Cass prepared Pan-fried gurnard with broad bean, spinach and mint stew. It’s different, delicious and highly underrated, says Cass. And far more sustainable than cod, so, if you haven’t already, why not give it a go? See his 30 minute recipe here. And you’ve got just six days to watch the programme on iPlayer here.
Canteen 1-0 Other 'multiple restaurants'
23rd June 2010 / Canteen 1-0 Other 'multiple restaurants'
It’s pretty hard to write while you’re doing backflips but here goes. Have you been crossing your fingers for us since we told you last month we were nominated in the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards? If you have then thank you because on Tuesday, 22 June, 2010, we beat Wahaca and four other restaurants who’d employed architects and designers, and one other in-house team, to collect the award for best design in the multiple restaurant category. Thank you judges. Also thank you of course to Windmill Furniture, Very Good and Proper, Twentytwentyone, Robert Dudley Best, Ernest Race, Hudson Powell and everyone in our in-house team who helps make sure our simple, honest designs reflect the quality of our food. See the other winners here.
Great taste in recipe books
7th June 2010 / Great taste in recipe books
If you’ve already picked up a copy of the recipe book: ‘Canteen: Great British Food’ by our very own Cass Titcombe, Dominic Lake and Patrick Clayton-Malone, then your taste in books is excellent. And that’s official. Why? Because we’re at the top of a list of bestselling recipe books by British chefs (niche, we know) compiled by Foyles bookshop in London and published in the Observer newspaper. There are some pretty heavyweight names in positions two till ten, including Jamie Oliver, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Heston Blumenthal and Allegra McEvedy. So we’re delighted recipe book buyers have put us at number one. If you were one of them, thank you. We think you’ve got great taste, too*.
*if not, pick up a copy from Foyles here.
Eat out and save lives
2nd June 2010 / Eat out and save lives
Visit Canteen and you will help malnourished children. It sounds crazy but it’s true. Action against Hunger works to save lives of malnourished children around the world by providing access to safe drinking water and sustainable food solutions. So we’re donating every £1 you spend on our ‘Great British Food’ booklet to help end child hunger. On its own, £1 isn’t a lot of money. But add a lot of these coins together and they will help fund life-saving programs in the treatment and prevention of malnourishment*.
Children at Canteen
26th May 2010 / Children at Canteen
Don’t tell the kids but we’ve got something rather special lined up for them at Canteen this summer. Until then, we just wanted to remind you: much of our menu* is available in half-portions – and for half the price. We think that makes a whole of lot of sense. Especially since we can reduce waste and you don’t have to fork out as much. We also hope that, counterintuitively, more Great British food makes it into hungry little tummies. As for our secret... you... we mean, the kids... will just have to wait.
*there are exceptions. Luckily, these don’t include fish finger sandwiches or ice cream.
Watch Cass Titcombe cook live
26th May 2010 / Watch Cass Titcombe cook live
Forget superstar DJs, pop bands and comedians. You haven’t been properly entertained until you’ve seen a master chef cook live on stage. It’s confirmed. Rock and roll Canteen head chef and co-owner, Cass Titcombe, is to demonstrate crowd-pleasing Great British food favourites at two of the summer’s best foodie festivals*: Potted duck and piccalilli at Hampton Court 31st May; and at Taste of London 17th June. So best book your tickets and get practicing your air grill now. And for those about to cook, we salute you!
Hang on a minute
19th May 2010 / Hang on a minute
Talking of design, here’s some more good news. It’s not just Canteen’s customers who benefit from comfortable, good-looking and functional interiors. Their coats, hats and scarves get somewhere groovy to hang out too. Twentytwentyone* has been stocking Very Good and Proper’s Canteen hook and knob for some time now. And we’ve just heard that MoMA (New York’s Museum of Modern Art) will be taking up this simple, colourful and functional item as well. A nice little bit of Canteen’s British design for the Big Apple. Marvellous.
*Buy the hook and knob here.
Canteen design FTW*
12th May 2010 / Canteen design FTW*
We can’t believe you haven’t heard. We’ve reach the last six from 23 entries into the ‘multiple restaurant’ category in the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards. The prize-giving takes place in London on 22 June. So cross your fingers for us until our next newsletter, will you?
We’re chuffed because it’s nice to be recognised (unless you’re on the run from the law, which we’re not). It’s even nicer to be recognised not just for our food but for something else we’re passionate about – design. In fact, we’re as focussed on how our restaurants look, feel and work, as we are about how our food tastes. We’d go as far as to say our design philosophy, like that of our grub, is all about being democratic and welcoming, celebrating British craftsmanship and using simple, honest materials. Winning design? You decide next time you visit. And please do let us know what you think – we’d love to hear from you.
Find out more about the awards and see who we’re up against here.
*FTW = for the win!
Canteen in movie deal
5th May 2010 / Canteen in movie deal
We’ve always wanted to write that headline. So until we exchange contracts on ‘Canteen: the movie’, we’re offering you the chance to enjoy a little movie deal of your own – two courses from our Baker Street branch’s fast service menu (either starter and main or main and pudding) for just £15, every day of the week, when you present your ticket from Everyman Cinema, Baker Street. (Cue ‘You’re going to need a bigger stomach’ line). But that’s not all. In the true spirit of a deal, Everyman, Baker Street, is making Canteen customers an offer in return – £2 off two tickets Monday to Thursday (Cue ‘Show me the money!’ line). Why not make a date with someone now for film and food and take advantage of these offers*?
*Fava beans and a nice Chianti not included.
Mmm, British beer
28th April 2010 / Mmm, British beer
Great British food needs a Great British brewer. And in Meantime London, we’ve certainly met our match. You just know you’re going to have to try a brew when its maker says its sole concern is to ‘put before the consumer the most exciting flavours to be found in beer that they are able to create with the wit and technology at their disposal’. We’ll drink to that. Throughout 2010, Meantime offers a range of limited editions. Right now it’s ‘Famous Belgian’, a 6.5% blonde abbey style ale. Join us for one*?
*Our beer list also features 20 of the UK’s finest bottled beers, stouts, ales, ciders and perrys. Cheers.
Canteen Takeaway Now Available
21st April 2010 / Canteen Takeaway Now Available
Prefer eating in the nude? Need to watch ‘Come dine with me’ as you dine? More likely you’re too busy even to order from our fast menu. Or you’d simply like to enjoy our food in the comfort of your own home (or office). Whatever the reason*, you’ll be delighted to know – takeaway is now available across all Canteen branches. See our takeaway menu for details.
*We won’t tell, honest.
Very Good & Proper. A lesson in design
14th April 2010 / Very Good & Proper. A lesson in design
It’s frowned upon now, obviously, but naughty schoolchildren used to get smacked bottoms. If only they’d been able to rest said sore bums on a chair this good looking and comfy. Stand up the latest addition to our Very Good and Proper range – the Canteen Utility Chair. Inspired by the ubiquitous post-war school chair. Steel frame in a host of colours married to a beech plywood seat and back. Light weight, stackable and suitable as both a dining chair and desk chair. Want one. Get one here
Get 10% off timeless clothing
7th April 2010 / Get 10% off timeless clothing
Just as we only use British ingredients in our food, we also celebrate and support great British design and craftsmanship. In fact, it’s one of our founding principles. So we asked Sunspel, a company with 150 years’ experience of producing timeless clothing, to make polo shirts for all our staff (they said yes). As well as being handmade in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, using Egyptian cotton, they’re also beautifully soft (the shirts, not our staff). So feel free to give them a hug next time you’re in (both).

To help spread the love, Sunspel is offering all Canteen customers 10% off all t-shirts, polo shirts, boxer shorts, jerseys and underwear at sunspel.com (Ts & Cs apply). Just use the code ‘canteen1’. Shop online here or put the Web away for a minute and visit the real-life store Sunspel’s just opened in Shoreditch store here.

26th November 2008 / Canteen in-house design team, Baker Street
GREAT BRITISH DESIGN - Canteen’s design philosophy is as much about quality and craftsmanship as its food philosophy. The heart of the concept for Canteen is the notion of democracy. Inspiration for the Canteen design concept came from the best examples of communal, public spaces such as schools, libraries, town halls and interiors that refer to the optimism of mid 20th century design and classlessness of community buildings such as the Royal Festival Hall. The emphasis is on simple, honest materials (oak, marble, linoleum, cork, tweed) that ensure design longevity and reflects the quality of the food offer. The restaurant design supports the food concept, an all-day menu serving high quality, nationally sourced modern British food.
